Smart and Dry: A SONOFF TH16-Based Filament Dryer Project

The DIY smart drying box I built using the SONOFF TH Elite has been running stably for over a week now, and I’m quite satisfied with its performance. So this weekend, I organized all the files and uploaded the project to MakerWorld (Smart Filament Dryer with In-Print Heating Support).

Various parts and components for a DIY smart drying box laid out on a wooden surface, including a transparent container, fan, circuit board, and several gray assembly pieces.

Included in the model:(All parts are support-free and do not require AMS multi-color printing, except the drying box top cover. It is recommended to print with PETG or ABS due to high internal temperatures during heating. PLA may soften and deform.)

  • Drying box base ×1
  • PTC mounting bracket ×1
  • Turbo fan top cover ×1
  • Drying box ×1
  • Drying box top cover ×1
  • Sensor holder ×1
  • Sensor wire clip ×1
  • Sensor wire screw (left and right halves) ×1
  • Sensor wire nut ×1
  • Filament tray bracket ×2
  • Filament tray rotating shaft ×2

Apart from these self-printed parts, only a few additional components need to be purchased. I’ve listed them below along with reference links. You can refer to the assembly guide on MakerWorld for detailed installation instructions.

Features of this DIY filament dryer box:

💰 Lower cost – Total DIY cost is around 150 RMB (About $25 USD), with heating performance comparable to the Bambu AMS HT

💡 Easy to assemble – Few parts required, no complex wiring or electronics knowledge needed — just plug and go

🌀 Supports drying while printing – Unlike the AMS HT which stops heating during printing, this design keeps drying

🔒 High sealing design – Ideal for long-term storage when combined with desiccant

📈 Real-time temperature & humidity monitoring – View and adjust from the app; also supports historical data logging

📱 Smart integration – Supports alerts for threshold breach, connects to platforms like Home Assistant for automation
